[Tokyo] Azabu Kawakamian 麻布 川上庵
The last meal of my Japan trip was at Azabu Kawakamian in Azabujuban! Kawakamian started in Karuizawa, Nagano which is renowned for the best soba in Japan due to its highlands that are perfectly suited for growing buckwheat. The Azabujuban branch was located pretty close to the metro station and we walked down a flight of stairs to the restaurant in the basement. There was a line already but luckily we only had to wait 15 minutes before we were seated. Pets are welcome in the terrace outside the main dining area as I saw dogs accompanying their owners while they were eating!
J got the prawn and vegetables tempura with cold soba noodles (¥1,950) which is the signature dish here. This is the dish they would recommend if this is your first time here. The tempura batter was light and crispy while the soba noodles were springy and chewy in the good way!
I ended up trying the duck broth soba (¥1,750) which is another popular dish here at the restaurant! The cold soba noodles were paired with a hot duck broth which was oh so rich and flavorful to dip the noodles in to eat while the duck meat had been carefully pan-fried to a crispy state to my surprise.
After I was finished with my noodles, a pot of tea and cup was given to me to mix with the duck broth so that I can drink it like soup which I enjoyed a lot!
To tell you the truth, we really came here for this heavenly dessert! The catalana (¥630) served here is a twist to the creme brulee as it was frozen so it had a butter-like texture with an equally rich flavor with a caramelized top. It was so good that I was glad we each got one plate so I didn't have to share!
