[Hong Kong] MR & MRS FOX

Rating: ❤❤❤1/2

After The Continental, Plat du Jour and Public, Swire's latest foray into the F&B scene is MR & MRS FOX in Quarry Bay! Helmed by the former chef at Cafe Gray, the restaurant comprises of 3 impressive floors with the first being a casual bar hang out spot, the second being a sit-down dining room and the third being a private dining area. It's exciting for people like me who work on the Island East side to finally have a new restaurant opening in our area for once! I came here for lunch with a few colleagues and since we didn't have a reservation, we had to stand in line to wait to be seated on the ground floor while those with reservations were led to the second floor. My group of 5 had to wait around 20 minutes or so before being seated while groups of 2 were seated faster so it's probably better to come in small group if you don't have a reservation.

The ground floor emitted a casual yet industrial chic vibe with high ceilings, brass pipes and brick walls while the wooden communal tables were all paired with high chairs.

The menu was quite simple and limited while the prices were reasonable with most items being under $100. I ended up getting the burger while my colleagues chose to try the Quick Fix combo where you can choose 2 items out of 4 choices.

We were given a complimentary plate of baguette to start along with a delicious black olive butter spread. I'm not a fan of olive to begin with but props for not being boring. The bread wasn't warm at all but it was okay to tide us over while we waited quite a while for our food to come.

My Black Angus BBQ Cheddar Burger ($95) came first with house cured bacon, caramelized onions, pickled green chili and a side of potato fries. I had ordered for my beef patty to be cooked medium and the burger came with a cute tag designated as such! The patty was cooked just right with a pinkish center while the burger on the whole was delish and full of flavors from the sauces. The potato fries were also a delight to eat as they were crispy to eat with a slightly sweet flavor.

My colleagues' Quick Fix Combo came soon after and at first glance the portions seemed rather small but I guess that is the reason why it only cost $85. I sampled a bit of each and comparatively the burger was much better than the options in the Quick Fix combo.

Duck & Pork Belly Rillettes with crushed hazenuts and Salad of Crispy Squid, Chickpea & Cous Cous with harissa and Greek yogurt. The rillettes was very soft and great to eat with the bread but the only complaint is that it only came with two pieces of baguette and rillettes is not really something you want to eat just by itself. The squid was crispy but not flavorful enough plus we were very confused on why it was called a salad but it didn't come with any leafy greens.

Hummus with Smoked Paprika & Za'atar and Lamb Sausage "Merguez" with lentils, smoked pork belly, coriander and mint gremolata. These dishes fared better than the previous ones since at least the hummus came with enough pieces of pita bread. The lamb sausage was probably the best out of the 4 dishes in the Combo as the flavors of the gremolata complimented the lamb perfectly with a hint of spiciness.

Verdict - even though our lunch experience turned out to be a mixed, I think I would definitely come back to try the food at dinner based on my fabulous burger. I'm not sure if the lunch menu is different on the second floor but I'm hoping that the menu can include a wider variety of choices in the future as it is very limited right now and I don't see a reason to go back for lunch.
