[San Francisco] Causwells - Best Burger in America?
When I heard that Causwells - an up and coming burger joint in SF - was a finalist for the "Best Burger in America" contest held by Thrillist, I had to go check it out! Located in the Marina district, the restaurant looked like a modern version of a traditional American diner with concrete floors and unfinished walls which serves classic American food. We came here on a weekday for lunch and the restaurant was half full but I hear that the restaurant can be quite packed for its weekend brunch. The menu was small and simple with appetizers, salads, sandwiches and heartier main dishes to choose from.
Of course we had to order the famous Americana Burger (US$15.75) which came with cheese and secret Causwells sauce while the two thin beef patties were cooked to a perfect medium. It was no doubt a very solid burger and I especially loved the little char-grilled bits on the patty but "best" is an awfully high distinction and I just don't think it's quite there yet. The sauce could have been more flavorful for one and it could have used more depth in flavors. It's certainly not the best burger I've ever had. If you don't go in with high expectations, you won't be disappointed.
The Tomato Soup with Parmesan Crisp (US$7) was tiny for the price. It came in a cup basically and while it was pretty good with tomato chunks for texture and strong flavors, it was just expensive for what it is but I guess in a city that can get away with $4 toasts and coffee, high prices are the norm rather than exceptions.
The last item we tried was the ever classic Deviled Eggs (US$6.25) with smoked trout, paprika and mustard. They used to offer an option with 3 different flavors with classic, avocado and smoked trout but for some reason they stopped offering that so we ended up getting the same flavors on all 3 of our deviled eggs. It was good though and I liked the kick in flavors from the smoked salmon with the egg.
