[Hong Kong] The Ocean - Best Restaurant with Ocean Views
I was back at The Ocean again and my third dining experience may be the best one yet! I was picked up at my house with the complimentary Tesla chauffeur service which is available upon request and makes the journey to the restaurant less of a hassle for those who do not live on the south side. Since my last two dining experience was lunch and the 4-hands dinner with Cuisines Michel Troisgros, I was here to try the dinner menu created solely by chef Agustin Balbi this time.
The beautiful venue is simply breathtaking and I fall in love with it more and more every time I come here.
The ocean views are spectacular and there's nothing more satisfying than watching the sunset while eating delicious food. I always look forward to trying the amuse bouche here which can be full of surprises and this time I got to try oysters with pineapple granita, minced scallops and prawns "corn dog" with Dijon mustard on top, and deep-fried octopus ball with Japanese bread crumbs. I was most impressed with the oyster dish which was refreshing to eat with a hint of spiciness as well.
The meal got off to a great start with the South African Abalone with Matsutake mushroom in Maitake mushroom consomme which was full of umami flavors! The abalone was tender and cooked just right but it was the Matsutake mushrooms that really stood out to me with its seared textures and rich flavors.
The Rice Pastry with Pine Nuts Puree was a surprise hit as it was utterly delicious! It was the only dish without seafood in the meal and supposedly inspired by the Chinese rice roll (cheung fun). The rice pastry was perfectly thin and chewy while I loved the contrasting textures of the crunchy pine nuts on the plate as well.
The Tomato Collection with burrata, squid, olive oil and yuzu was probably the only dish I wasn't in love with as the flavors didn't really come together while the squid was quite bland. The tomatoes were very lovely though but I just didn't think the squid went well with the dish.
The Lobster with corn mousse, pine nut and lime was my favorite dish of the meal as the lobster tail was perfectly cooked with a semi-raw texture while the sweet corn mousse went delightfully well with the seafood.
The Pan-seared Black Cod with potato puree, radish and summer black truffle was another successful dish as the fish was nicely cooked with firm and flaky textures. The potato puree was heavenly as well and I liked that the truffle flavors were subtle and not fake at all.
I love the palate cleanser here which arrives as a Sugar Pearl with coconut sorbet and raspberry foam.
The meal ended on high notes as the Black Chocolate Mousse Cake with lemon sorbet was decadent and luscious to eat with its super rich chocolate flavors!
The Mignardises with pistachio macaron, raspberry and blueberry tart, and yuzu tart were finely made and served as a great sweet ending to the meal.
Verdict - the food I had this time at The Ocean was the best out of all my previous experiences and with its beautiful venue, spectacular ocean views, and attentive service, I think the restaurant is one of the best places to celebrate a special occasion in Hong Kong!
