[Peru: Cusco] Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train to Machu Picchu

All aboard the luxurious Hiram Bingham, A Belmond Train - a 1920’s style train that takes passengers on an unforgettable voyage from Cusco to Machu Picchu! Named after the American explorer who rediscovered the site of the ancient Inca citadel, the stylish train offers amazing views of the changing landscape during its 3.5 hrs journey. There are many ways to visit the ancient site whether it be with a tour agency or arranging by yourself, but the Hiram Bingham provides the convenience of handling everything for you from the transportation, tickets to Machu Picchu, and tour guide - all while doing it in style. At over US$500 per person one way, the Hiram Bingham is not cheap but in my opinion, is definitely worth it for a once in a lifetime journey to the heart of the Inca Empire!

The train to Machu Picchu departed early in the morning at 9am, and we started our trip with welcome drinks and a traditional music and dance performance during the check-in process at the Poroy Station which is 20 minutes away from Cusco.

Soon we boarded the train to our assigned seats and table where a gourmet lunch with local delicacies and Peruvian wine was served around 2 hours into the journey.

During the journey, we were free to roam the other parts of the train including the Bar Car where an array of refreshing cocktails was made to order, and the Observatory Car with live music and unobstructed views from the back of the train!

Upon our arrival at the arrival station in Aguas Calientes, we were given complementary backpacks with aluminum water bottles for our tour of Machu Picchu. We took a private bus transfer up to the citadel and started our guided tour. After the visit, we enjoyed refreshments and afternoon tea at the Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel - the only hotel located at the ancient site. It was a magical journey with fantastic service from beginning to end!
