[Peru: Machu Picchu] Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel

After our tour of Machu Picchu, we checked into the Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel - the only hotel located at the entrance of Machu Picchu! The other closest hotels are at the foot of the mountain which requires a 30 minute bus ride, so the location of the Sanctuary Lodge is super convenient.  It was also the perfect place to unwind after a full day of adventure as the property is a hidden oasis with lots of greenery and a beautiful orchid garden boasting stunning views of Huayna Picchu!

Rooms here do not come cheap so is it worth it? I think so especially if you plan on visiting Machu Picchu multiple times and early in the morning so you don't have to deal with queuing for the bus. The service at Belmond was also unparalleled as the staff was super helpful during our stay - even helping us get on the first bus to Aguas Calientes when there was a long line and having a staff wait at the bottom of the mountain to guide us to the train station!

ROOM:

There are only 31 rooms at the hotel so if you plan on staying here, it's best to book your room as soon as possible especially during high season. Three room types are available - Standard Room, Deluxe Room, and One Bedroom Suites. We stayed in the One Bedroom Suite which is their largest accommodation at 35 sqm with separate living area and furnished terrace. As we were celebrating J’s birthday, the staff surprised us with a huge bouquet of flowers and a bottle of champagne!

Can you believe this was made with chocolate?!

All drinks and snacks in the room were complimentary

Foot cream sounds amazing after a day of hiking!

FACILITIES:

The hotel blends into its nature surroundings with many relaxation areas and beautiful gardens where you can take a walk or practice yoga. A range of massages and aromatherapy treatments are offered as well.

DINING:

When you stay at Sanctuary Lodge, all meals are included from breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Tampu restaurant serves a range of international and Peruvian dishes, and is open exclusively for guests of the hotel only. For dinner, we tried a few traditional dishes and even a grilled Alpaca loin while listening to live traditional Peruvian music. The hotel also has a bar that specializes in Pisco and offers a complimentary cocktail experience for hotel guests - similar to the one we had at Miraflores Park!

Amazonian Tiradito

Quinua Andean Soup

Nikkei Pork Belly

Grilled Alpaca Loin

Surprise birthay cake for J!

Breakfast is part buffet and part a la carte with several made to order dishes including classic egg dishes, French toast, pancakes, and an Amazonian choice with cecina and chorizo.

Amazonian Delight

For lunch, we partook in a special cooking class which took place outside in the gardens where we learned how to make traditional Ceviche and Lomo Saltado - a popular Chifa dish with stir-fried sirloin, tomatoes, onions, rice and french fries!
